A New Garage Door?

“My door isn’t working right”, do I need a new one?

That has become a common phrase when going to a home for a free estimate and the prevailing answer is “Do you want a new Garage Door? Just because it isn’t working or has even been backed into doesn’t mean that it cannot be repaired. So, with that out of the way, if you do decide that a new Garage Door is what you want I would like to suggest a few items to consider.

The Look

Curb appeal is the leading factor in replacing the garage door and there are many different styles of garage doors from the traditional panel, raised ranch panel, Carriage house, Mill Creek and that list goes on and on. Drive around your neighborhood and see if there is something that jumps out and grabs your attention, whether it is the first part of the home that everyone sees or in the back of your home. Your vision what it should be is the one that counts.

Price

The amount that is spent on purchasing a garage door is as diverse as the style. The leading factors are style, all styles are not created equal extra embossing, hinges and handles and windows and the bottom line and should be considered. A trick is that some less expensive door can be made to resemble an expensive door, our Traditional Ranch Panel can be made to resemble the Carriage House style just by adding the hinges and handles. Insulated/ non-insulated, this will be covered in depth next. Choosing the company that best fits your wants, there are a few Garage Door companies that are very reputable and will stand behind their work. With sites such as Angie’s List and the BBB, you will not have to look very far to find one. Keep in mind that we all have different pay scales and suppliers, as such our cost is different and the prices will reflect that. Ask what you get for the cost, some companies do not include the weather seal around the door and it is an additional cost as does hauling the old door away. It is your money and was earned; make sure the company you choose has earned your business.

Insulated/ Non-Insulated

As easy as most may think I find this a hard choice, a non-insulated garage door is about 1/3 less the price, however, the 3 layer sandwich constructed garage door is by far superior. The components of each are the same (hinges, rollers and such) it is the stability and the movement that are what separates them. If you have a detached garage, please get the non-insulated garage door, if there is a room above the garage or you do not want to hear the door rattle, then you want an insulated door for the noise reduction and the R-value that it will provide.

The Company

All companies are not created equal, as stated above there are very good local companies in the St. Louis area that will provide quality service. Information is free and at your disposal, get referrals, check with the Google, Yelp, Facebook or our favorite Angie’s List. People are very quick to either point out a company that has treated them less than they expected or were exceptional. Every company will have similar Garage Doors, a door is a door and should be in the same range for similar doors and most companies will give free estimates on service/repair and new garage doors.
